I. <noun> "The ear". Translation of the Sanskrit [NDS] "śhrotra". [Hon] is སྙན་ q.v.
A. The ears are among the orifices of the human body. 1) The ears are two of the བུ་ག་སྒོ་དགུ་ nine general orifices of the human body q.v. 2) The ears are one of རྣམ་ཤེས་འཕོ་བའི་བུ་ག་དགུ་ the nine orifices of the human body via which the consciousness exits at the time of death.
B. The physical ears are part of the process of perception. They house the sense of hearing. 1) The "ear" faculty contained in the physical ear is one of the དབང་པོ་དྲུག་ six sense faculties that are the means by which consciousness occurs. 2) The "ear" faculty contained in the physical ear is thus one of སྐྱེ་མཆེད་བཅུ་གཉིས་ the twelve sources of consciousness q.v. 3) The "ear" faculty is thus also one of ཁམས་བཅོ་བརྒྱད་ the eighteen parts of perception q.v. 4) The "ear" consciousness is one of the རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་དྲུག་ six types of consciousness. It arises because of སྒྲ་ sounds coming into contact with the ear sense faculty.
