<noun> The name of a very infectious disease. The name is derived from one of the epithets of དཔལ་ལྡན་ལྷ་མོ་ Palden Lhamo—བལ་མོ་ཧེ་ལེ་འབར་མ་ Balmo Helebarma—who is said to inflict the disease.

Translation of the Sanskrit "vetali". 1) The name of a form of དཔལ་ལྡན་ལྷ་མོ་ Shrī Devi, a major female protector of Indian Buddhism who was installed by Padmasaṃbhava as the main protector of Tibet when he subdued the land and introduced the Buddhist way. 2) She is also one of the བཀའ་གདམས་པའི་སྒྲོལ་མ་བཅུ་གཉིས་ "twelve Tārās of the Kadampas" q.v.
